2015 Severe Weather Spotter Classes

In conjunction with Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, Dane County Emergency Management is hosting a Severe Weather Spotter Class on Thursday April 9, 2015. This year’s class will include information on improving personal preparedness specific to severe weather from AmeriCorps, opportunities to get involved with storm spotting through the Midwest Severe Storm Tracking and Response Center, and a presentation from the Milwaukee/Sullivan National Weather Service Forecast Office on severe weather. The class is FREE of charge.

The class is offered twice, from 2:00 – 4:00pm at the American Red Cross (4860 Sheboygan Ave., Madison , WI 53705) and again from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the UW School of Nursing (701 Highland Ave., Madison, WI 53705). No registration is required. See the attached map for free parking at the UW.

Severe weather is the most prevalent hazard in Dane County. Being prepared for severe weather includes not only learning about what is in the skies, but taking action to prepare your household before severe weather strikes. Individual’s emergency preparedness actions can reduce the impacts of sever weather. One of these actions should include learning about Dane County’s warning system and sign up for specific Dane County’s alerts at https://www.countyofdane.com/emergency/warning.aspx.

Emergency Management Director Charles A. Tubbs, Sr. wants the public to understand that being prepared also means being involved. "I encourage people to not only be more prepared, but also follow the AmeriCorps example and volunteer their time to help their neighbors and community be more prepared for emergencies." The majority of the work to organize and promote this event has been done by AmeriCorps volunteers.
