Young Adults Signing Up for Coverage in Greater Numbers,

But Are Still Most Likely to Be Without Insurance

With an important enrollment deadline just 38 days away for health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act, county and federal officials are urging those who have yet to sign up to take advantage of local enrollment assistance events going on throughout the county, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced today.

Parisi, joined by Congressman Mark Pocan and Kathleen Falk, Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Region V, spoke to students on the Madison College campus about the importance of signing up for health insurance coverage.

Young adults are most likely to be without health insurance. Of the number of Wisconsin adults who are eligible for coverage and uninsured, 42% are 19 – 34 years old. That amounts to 209,000 young adults who must sign up before enrollment ends for the year on March 31st.

Nationally, nearly half (46%) of single young adults who are uninsured, and may be eligible for coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace, could get coverage for $50 or less per month.

“Too many people have experienced the fear of living without health insurance – the fear of being healthy one day and suddenly getting sick, or of a healthy loved one getting sick,” said Parisi. “With the Affordable Care Act, people don’t have to live with that fear anymore. We’re encouraging young adults, and anyone who still needs coverage, to take advantage of local assistance and sign up before open enrollment ends.”

“The passage of the Affordable Care Act marked a defining moment in our country where we decided that access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans should be a right, not a privilege,” said Congressman Pocan. “With the deadline to enroll in health care coverage around the corner, we must do all we can to reach as many young people as possible.”

“The Affordable Care Act represents a new day for millions of Americans who can now live out their dreams and better provide for their families, without having to worry that the next illness or injury will be financially devastating,” said Kathleen Falk, Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Region V.

“With less than six weeks left to enroll, now is the time for us parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to talk to a young person today about the importance of getting health insurance.”

A number of local enrollment opportunities are available between now and the upcoming deadlines. All offer face-to-face assistance through a knowledgeable organization to help people successfully navigate sign up, and to answer any questions they may have about cost and coverage.

A list of some enrollment opportunities can be found below. Individuals applying for coverage must provide:

  • Birthdates and Social Security numbers (or document numbers for lawfully present immigrants) for each person seeking insurance.

  • Employer and income information for every member of the household (i.e. pay stubs, W-2 forms or 2012 tax records).

  • Policy numbers for all health insurance plans currently covering members of the household.

Individuals can also sign up online through HealthCare.gov or by calling 1-800-318-2596 to sign up with a representative over the phone.
