Dane County Executive Joe Parisi issued the following statement after regarding the proposed 2013 budget from the county’s Department of Human Services.  Parisi will review the department’s request in advance of issuing his county budget on October 1, 2012.

“Given the continued challenges so many families are facing, I’m heartened to see a proposed increase of more than $6.2 million in the county’s Department of Human Services budget proposal for 2013.

“Half of the entire county budget each year is invested in helping our vulnerable friends and neighbors.  The proposal Director Green’s has sent to me continues the county’s long standing tradition of providing a safety net of services stronger than any other in the state.

“Through the creative work of department staff and providers who help deliver services for the county, this budget increases outside revenue while enhancing the access to, and the quality of, our human services safety net.  It includes a funding increase of $3 million for persons with developmental disabilities, and a $400,000 increase in mental health services.

“New resources in programming and staff in the areas of child protective services, alcohol and drug addiction services, and gang prevention address pressing needs in our community.

“And this proposal preserves preventative, proven successes like the  Early Childhood Initiative and Joining Forces for Families programs that aren’t done anywhere else and help needy families find meaningful, family-supporting employment.

“All of this was achieved despite the continued decrease in financial support from the state for the services we provide, and in the face of increased need for these vital services as families continue to recover from the Great Recession.

“I look forward to reviewing the department’s proposal in the coming weeks as I continue to prepare my 2013 budget.”
