The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission announces its 2012 Call for Art with Deeply Rooted theme. Local visual artists are invited to submit art for consideration and inclusion in the Commission’s signature 2014 art calendar and 2013 art poster and companion bookmark. The 2014 calendar will be the 15th edition and 2013 poster the 35nd  in an annual series.  Each year, thousands of calendars, posters, and bookmarks are distributed throughout Dane County and beyond.  They have become beloved icons that highlight the vitality of Dane County’s artistic and cultural landscape.

Artistic interpretation of Deeply Rooted theme can be literal or abstract.  Art images might relate to the plant body part, typically but not always below ground, that bears no leaves.  Or they may relate to ideas, principles, people, practices or attributes that are deep-rooted, firmly connected, fixed or held.  Showcased art will in one way or another depict this theme and characterize the distinction of our Dane County local culture.  Favored images will provocatively and positively evoke Dane County.  Broad and creative interpretation of Deeply Rooted theme is welcomed.  Representation of the seasons and annual cycle is desired.

The Commission’s Art Advisory Committee will select images based on a variety of criteria including:  evocation and representation of Dane County, artistic quality, balance of seasonal representations of Dane County, market appeal, and illustration of the theme. Artists must be Wisconsin residents at the time of application.  Dane County artists receive strong preference. Two-dimensional art in all mediums will be considered.  All images submitted will be considered for selection.  Fourteen images likely will be chosen for the calendar and one or more images likely for the poster and bookmark.

The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2012. Applicants will be notified by December 31, 2012. Full application instructions are available on the Commission’s website: www.culturalaffairscommission.com.

Artists selected for inclusion in the calendar will be awarded $100 per image for reproduction rights. Artist selected for the poster/bookmark will be awarded up to $500 for reproduction rights.  Honoraria subject to change based upon design.  All artists selected also receive a small supply of free calendars, or posters and bookmarks for personal use.
