Falk Statement: Court of Appeals Action on Legislation Ending Workers’ Rights

County Executive Kathleen Falk issued the following statement after the Wisconsin Court of Appeals today declined to overrule a judge’s order temporarily blocking implementation of Governor Walker’s proposal to end collective bargaining rights for workers.  Falk said:
 

“Today’s action by the Court of Appeals upholds Judge Sumi’s reasonable and appropriate decision to stop this measure from becoming law until important legal questions are answered.

 

These questions stem from a legislative process in which open government rules were blatantly broken and most importantly, people’s trust in their democracy was diminished.

 

Because of those abuses in power, I filed legal complaints with the Dane County District Attorney and Attorney General along with a separate lawsuit to ensure our lawmakers followed the law themselves. 

 

Because the Dane County District Attorney acted on the complaints that I and others filed, the judicial system is now appropriately reviewing what took place in the State Capitol earlier this month and I’m confident our longstanding shared value of open, honest, and transparent government will prevail.”
