Major Improvements Slated for University Avenue, Highway K

Dane County will receive federal stimulus funding for a pair of significant highway improvement projects.

University Avenue (County Highway MS) between Segoe Road and Shorewood Boulevard and County Highway K between County Highways M and Q in the Town of Westport will be upgraded in 2010 through dollars the county has secured under the Federal Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

$600,000 in stimulus funding will pay for the repaving and improvements on Highway K. The pavement on University Avenue will be replaced, upgrading a significant stretch of the busy thoroughfare.  That estimated $3-million project will also be fully funded by stimulus dollars.

“By aggressively pursuing every pot of stimulus money we can, we’re improving vital infrastructure and helping to put people to work,” County Executive Kathleen Falk said.  “These projects will make it safer and easier for people to get around Dane County.”

This latest round of highway funding is in addition to more than $1.7 million in stimulus the county secured earlier this year for bridge improvement projects that will begin this month on Highway B in Rockdale and Highway N in Dunkirk.

In addition to all these road projects, Dane County’s Human Services Department has secured federal stimulus funding that will help with programs for school kids in the community.  The $130,000 will bring 10 new AmeriCorps positions into the department to assist with tutoring efforts and after-school programs in middle and high schools throughout Dane County.  This work will be done in schools and youth centers in communities like Madison, Sun Prairie, Verona, and Oregon.

These new funds are in addition to more than $68,000 in federal stimulus Dane County Human Services has received to date for senior nutrition/home meal delivery programs.
