Local Officials, Bicycle Companies, Recreational and Commuting Cyclists Meet Today

Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk is hosting a meeting with local officials, representatives of local bicycling businesses, and cycling advocates Tuesday afternoon, to help map out what the future holds for bicycling in the county.  The meeting will discuss making Dane County more “bike friendly” for those who ride for recreation or pedal to and from work and school.

The meeting will be held today from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Lussier Family Heritage Center at Lake Farm Park.

“Whether it’s a relaxing ride in the countryside, getting to and from work, or the hundreds of dads and moms who put food on their table by working hard for major local bike businesses like Trek, Saris, Pacific Cycle, and Planet Bike, biking offers so much to so many of us here in Dane County” Falk said.

Falk noted there are more than 1,400 bicycling manufacturing, sales, distribution , parts, and repair jobs in Dane County.  Cycling has an estimated $1-billion impact on Wisconsin’s economy each year.

Those attending today’s meeting will be asked to draw out on maps their favorite bike routes and routes they feel may be used more for recreation and commuting in the future.

This information will be compiled and offered to the Dane County Parks Commission for its work every five years to update the Dane County Parks and Open Space Plan.  Efforts to update the plan will begin this fall and a revised version of it should be completed in the spring of 2011.
