Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk announced today the county has received a more than $141,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to assist the county with work to preserve Vermont Creek.  Vermont Creek is a trout stream and an important tributary of Black Earth Creek, a nationally known trout stream.

“These generous state dollars will go a long way in helping our efforts to preserve and improve these important fishing waters,” Falk said.  “This work will help anglers for generations to enjoy the beautiful water and surroundings along Vermont Creek.”

The grant will be used to help with efforts to reduce run-off into Vermont Creek and create better habitat for trout.

The county will match funds received through the DNR grant through the Dane County Land and Water Legacy Fund Streambank Protection account.  The county has applied for additional grant dollars for the project through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Vermont Creek is located in the Town of Vermont in western Dane County, just north of the Villlage of Mount Horeb, and flows into Black Earth Creek just west of the Village of Black Earth.
