Falk Press Statement: Dane County Awarded More than $3-Million Grant

Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement from Governor Doyle that Dane County has been awarded a $3,006,282 Transportation Enhancement and Bicycle and Pedestrian Program grant for construction of a new trail linking the City of Madison to the Village of McFarland:
”Thanks to Governor Doyle, Dane County is excited to get the wheels turning on constructing a trail that will be a crown jewel for both our county and all of southern Wisconsin.
This scenic Lower Yahara River Trail will connect the Capital City Trail at Lake Farm County Park to McDaniel Park in McFarland and cross the Yahara River where it enters Lake Waubesa. This is phase one of the trail that will eventually follow the Yahara River to the City of Stoughton.
Whether taking a bike ride, hike, or a jog, this trail offers new exciting opportunities for families to get out and enjoy Dane County’s gorgeous lakes and lands,” Falk said
Dane County partnered with the Village of McFarland, Cities of Madison and Monona, the Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad and the Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner to plan for this project, which has been included in the Dane County Parks and Open Space Plan for the past 15 years.
Construction of this trail is slated to begin in 2011.
In addition, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board today (Wednesday, October 27th) approved the Master Plan for the Capital Springs State Recreation Area which includes both the Lower Yahara River Trail and the Capital City State Trail. This plan details the protection, management, and use of over 2,500 acres of public land between the City of Fitchburg and Madison.
