The Dane County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, is once again offering ATV Safety Certificate Classes for 2010. The first class is scheduled for May 15, 2010, with other yet to be scheduled classes offered throughout the remainder of the year. Over the past two years, 200 students have been certified through classes offered by the Sheriff’s Office.

All ATV operation on areas open to the public, including frozen surfaces, requires a valid ATV Safety Certificate for riders who are at least 12 years of age, born on or after January 1, 1988. While Wisconsin does not require a Safety Certificate for those riders born prior to January 1, 1988, attendance in a class is strongly encouraged, and many states across the country require valid ATV safety certificate regardless of age.

Students attending ATV Safety Certification participate in both classroom curriculum, and a practical riding course. Ownership or access to an ATV is not required to participate in the class, as the Sheriff’s Office and the DNR have ATV’s available for student use during the course. The class requires one full day and a fee of $10.00 to complete. Students must be at least 11 years of age at the time of the class in order to participate. Certification becomes valid once the student attains the age of 12.

Additional information on offered courses, and on-line registration, is available on the Sheriff’s Office website, www.danesheriff.com, and the DNR website, www.dnr.state.wi.us. Future classes will be listed on both websites once they are scheduled.
