Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk announced today the county has reached a tentative agreement on a contract for 2010 and 2011 with the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

The agreement, pending ratification by the 412 members of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association, includes the same provisions that all other Dane County employees have agreed to for 2010:  a voluntary 3% wage reduction in exchange for eight additional days off and a no-layoff pledge for 2010.  Like all other county employees, the 3% wage reduction will be for one-year (2010).

The tentative agreement reached with the deputies is a two-year contract and includes a 3% salary increase at the end of the second year (effective December 17, 2011).

“These negotiations have been challenging but the result of us staying at the table is a fair offer that I hope the 412 members of the deputy’s union will quickly ratify,” Falk said.

Falk noted the Sheriff’s Department budget for 2010 will increase about $3.5-million next year to more than $66-million.

Declines in sales tax, real estate fees and other economic related revenues collected by counties (not cities, villages, or towns) combined with state budget cuts resulted in a $12.5-million reduction in funding available for next year’s budget.   If all county employees agree to a 3% salary reduction for 2010, that will result in $4.7-million in savings and preserve county public safety and human services in the year ahead.
