CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSION AWARDS $124,290

Fifty grants supporting arts and cultural activities countywide with public-private funds

        The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission announces the award of forty-four project grants totaling $109,700 for community arts, cultural, and local history programs, three capital grants totaling $11,590, and three special awards totaling $3,000, serving an estimated 171,435 area citizens and residents.  In the Commission’s third and final grant cycle of the year, county dollars combined with funds from the American Girl’s Fund for Children, Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation, The Evjue Foundation, Inc., the charitable arm of The Capital Times, Madison Community Foundation’s Arts Access Fund, Overture Foundation, and Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation will be matched by over $910,000 from other sources.  Capital grants awarded to small arts organizations with funds provided to the Commission by the Overture Foundation are matched dollar-for-dollar by the recipients with dollars from other local sources.  The grant recipients follow.

Visual Arts

Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, $3,500  supporting Apple Pie:  Symbols of Americana featuring a thematic selection of works drawn from the museum’s holdings.

Community Partnerships, Inc., $2,000 in support of EyeSpeak, a photographic project engaging high risk youth with mental health challenges in learning phtotography techniques, observing, and expressing their voices.

UW Cinematheque, $1,200 in support of Before Cinema Novo:  Brazilian Cinema of the 1950s including screening a series of eight feature films from Brazil’s national Film Archive, Cinemateca Brasileira, as part of the UW Cinematheque’s spring series.

James Watrous Gallery, $4,000 in support of Stitched Ground:  Four Artists Embroider the Land, a collaboration between the Watrous Gallery and UW-Madison’s School of Human Ecology’s Design Gallery presenting an exhibition exploring landscape through the richly textured medium of fabric and embroidery.

UW-Madison Arts Institute, $4,000 for the 12^th annual Wisconsin Film Festival, a community-wide tradition, including a wide array of an estimated 200 films.

Mount Horeb Area Arts Association, $1,500 supporting its 4^th annual Spring Art Tour, a free, three-day open studios event showcasing approximately 25 artists and their work.

Music

Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, $2,000 in support of Masterworks Concert with Stewart Goodyear, renowned pianist.

Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, $2,000 in support of Masterworks with Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, an accomplished ensemble playing a wide-ranging repertoire.

Madison Cultural Arts District, $4,000 for Sones de México, a premier folk music ensemble, presenting multiple peformances, educational programs, and community events.

Madison Symphony Orchestra, $2,500 presenting Concerts with Philippe Bianconi and Dean Peterson, renowned pianist and bass-baritone.

Madison Symphony Orchestra, $4,000 for 2010 Spring Young People’s Concert engaging area middle and high school youth, featuring winners of Bolz Young Artist Competion.

Madison Opera, $4,500 for production of Wagner’s grand The Flying Dutchman.

Verona Area Performing Arts Series,$1,500 supporting concert and clinic with renowned pianist David Osborne.

Madison Area Concert Handbells, $1,000 supporting Retirement Community Concerts.

Wisconsin Folk Arts Association, $1,000 brining world class musician and teacher Jacqueline Schwab to our community for several events including solo piano concert, English country dance workshop and dance, and teaching/performance workshops for students.

MAMA, Inc., $1,500 in support of annual Madison Area Music Awards Concert celebrating accomplishments of wide-ranging area music makers.

Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, $4,000 supporting WYSO Winterfest Concerts.

Madison Youth Choirs, $4,000 supporting semester-long study and culminating performances focused upon The Little Prince.

Madison Youth Choirs, $1,000 supporting a festival and performances for area young males singers.

Dance

Li Chiao-Ping Dance, $4,000 in support of  eVOLUTION, a concert with two guest artists including a series of several dances meditating on the theme of change and survival.

Jin-Wen Yu Dance, $2,500 for Meta-50 celebrating Yu’s first half-century with living and dancing.

Wisconsin Union Theater, $2,000 supporting Spring Dance Events including visits by Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Nrityagram Indian Dance Ensemble, and Marc Bamuthi Joseph.

Kanopy Dance Theatre, $3,000 for Celebration of Dance perfomances featuring culmination of a four-year project engaging Kanopy and four local ethnic dance companies.

Madison Ballet, $3,000 supporting presentation of Cinderella.

Theater

The Madison Savoyards, $2,000 for Madison premiere production of Tarantara, Tarantara.

Four Seasons Theatre, $2,750 supporting a special Evening of Broadway Favorties with Marin Mazzie, Jason Danieley and Four Seasons Theatre Orchestra.

Madison Theatre Guild, $1,500 for two productions, Two Rooms and Meg.

Children's Theater of Madison, $4,000 supporting production of Lily’s Plastic Purse by local author Kevin Henkes.

Children's Theater of Madison, $3,500 supporting production of C. S. Lewis’s literary classic Narnia.

Strollers Theatre, $2,000 supporting production of Man of La Mancha.

Laboratory Theatre, $2,500 in support of Schoolhouse Rock Live! for area youth.

Sun Prairie Civic Theatre, $1,000 for production of The Froeigner. 

KOJO Productions, $3,000 supporting several communinty presentations of Buffalo Soldiers:  The Legacy.

PlayTime Productions, $3,000 for production and presentation of Sleeping Beauty for several thousand youth and families at multiple venues countywide.

Multidisciplinary Arts/Culture

Sarah White, $500 supporting Remember to Write Spring 2010, a series of writing workshops, story-share performance events, and public talks targeting middle-aged and senior writers.

Madison Cultural Arts District, $4,000 for 2010 International Festival, a day-long event showcasing diverse cultural art forms representative of and presented by the people of Dane County.

Arts-in-Schools

West Middleton PTO, $1,500 in support of Bee Rules Tile Mural project.

Opera for the Young, $3,250 for Rusalka:  A Mermaid’s Tale presented with area youth in their schools countywide.

Monona Terrace Community Events, $2,500 supporting Terrace Town 2010 Going Green, a program engaing area youth in designing and building models of sustainable communities.

Madison Metropolitan School District, $1,000 for Living The Dream, installing a mural created in part by local youth in Madison’s renovated Villager Mall’s atrium.

Madison Children's Museum, $2,000 in support of Kids Caps Community Art Initiative, a large scale public art project involving elementary school youth in creation of monumental sculptural installation in museum’s new facility.

Capital

Town of Rutland, $3,250 for interior insulation and ceiling repair of Rutland Center Church.

Madison Theatre Guild, $4,790 for firehouse improvements involving storm window replacement.

Four Seasons Theatre, $3,550 for purchasing wireless microphones and related sound equipment.        

Special Awards

Vi Miller Award of Excellence, $1,000, to Madison Ballet, in support of its Movement in Your World, a special program offering dance opportunities for very young children in Head Start classrooms countywide. 

The Commission annually designates one grant recipient whose activities demonstrate high artistic quality, strong educational value, and serve children and youth in Dane County communities both within and outside of the City of Madison.  The award is named in honor of the late Vi Miller, niece of William Evjue, wife of The Capital Times publisher, Fred Miller, and long-time officer of The Capital Times Co. and The Evjue Foundation, Inc.  Vi Miller was a very generous contributor to the cultural life of Dane County.  This special award, created in Miller’s memory, honors her devotion to the arts and community service.  The Evjue Foundation, Inc. and Dane County fund it jointly.
