Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Serves Families, Seniors in Need

Families needing help getting their taxes done are being encouraged to take advantage of a free service being offered once again this tax season by Dane County and the UW-Extension.

Under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program, volunteers, many of whom are retired State Department of Revenue staff, help low income, disabled and senior citizens prepare tax forms at no charge.

"With the state of our nation's economy there's a lot on everyone's mind right now, but hopefully this free service will help our families have one less thing to worry about,” County Executive Kathleen Falk said.  "These volunteers make what can otherwise be a confusing and cumbersome task, a little easier."

Nearly 6,000 people took advantage of the VITA service in 2008 with refunds from those returns totaling $4.3 million to Dane County taxpayers.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is offered at the Financial Education Center at 2330 South Park Street.  The service is available Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The Dane County UW-Extension Financial Education Center is a very valuable resource the county is proud to provide for residents.  The Center offers programs year-round to help improve financial literacy for families.  That includes courses on budgeting, money management, and ways to reduce debt.   For more information call 608-261-5077 or visit our website at http://fec.uwex.edu
