County Leading Workshops in Schools on Emergency Preparedness

Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk announced today the county has begun a series of training sessions and workshops in schools to help educators prepare for emergencies.

The training is being coordinated by the Dane County Department of Emergency Management and is being done in schools in Verona, Sun Prairie, and Stoughton.

“These workshops help make our schools, teachers, and students safer,” County Executive Kathleen Falk said.  “We’re promoting the importance of preparedness for our kids and communities.”

The training helps schools develop and improve safety and emergency response plans.  School administrative and educational staff learn aspects of the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System which provides guidance on managing emergencies.  The workshops also include information on how the County’s Emergency Operations Center functions and how it could be of assistance to schools during disasters.

County staff are using the training opportunity to show educators how to perform Cardio-Cerebral Resuscitation (CCR), a cutting-edge emergency medical technique being pioneered by Dane and only a handful of other counties across the country.

The first school preparedness training session was held December 11th in Sun Prairie.  Sessions will be offered for Verona schools on January 8th  and in Stoughton on February 27th.

The school preparedness training is being funded through a federal grant the county secured through the Office of Homeland Security.
