Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk will receive the “2008 Outstanding Community Leadership” award from the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse at a ceremony Friday afternoon. Falk launched a new county initiative this year to address the many human and economic harms that alcohol abuse has on Dane County communities. "Kathleen Falk has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in managing the resources of Dane County, Kate Nesheim, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse said. “Her understanding of the serious problems caused by alcohol and other drug addiction has led her to produce solutions for the benefit of all. We honor this insight and dedication today." “We enjoy such a great quality of life in Dane County and that’s why it’s so important to stop letting the crises resulting from the overconsumption of alcohol keep bringing us down,” Falk said. “More of our family members, friends, and neighbors are coming together with the common purpose of stopping the hurt and harm of excessive drinking.” As part of Falk’s initiative, Dane County sheriff’s deputies will begin extra patrols targeting drunk drivers on Friday and Saturday nights in 2009. The county will also debut a new program next year in a pair of Dane County middle schools to help prevent kids from starting drinking, and work with students identified as having alcohol problems. Falk’s initiative also led to creation of a new county alcohol coalition with dozens of business, health, law enforcement, educational, and community leaders to confront the challenges of alcohol abuse. Falk will be presented the leadership award at the annual board of directors meeting of the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse on Friday afternoon at 1:30.
