Madison – Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today issued her 2007 budget requirements to county elected officials, the County Board and county department heads. This is Falk’s 10th budget, and in it, she continues to prioritize public safety and human services programs. Falk’s guidelines call for a requirement to cut costs or raise non-tax revenue for each county department, with the exception of the three public safety departments (the Sheriff, District Attorney and 911 Center.) For other departments with budgets over $2 million the target is 7%, for the county’s Human Service’s Department the target is 5% and for smaller departments and programs the target is 3.5%. Collectively, the budget target for all county departments is approximately $5,755,312 million. “For several reasons, this is a more difficult budget year than last year. Costs to continue - such as personnel and insurance costs - have risen, and cuts in the state and federal budgets continue to hurt the county. As always, it is our priority to continue serving citizens with a high level of quality services while limiting property taxes,” said Falk. County department heads and elected officials will work on their budgets over the next few months and submit them to the County Executive. The County Executive will present her budget to the County Board October 1, 2006. The budget memo is attached. ###
