Third ‘Dane in a Day’ is all about bikes!

Falk to pedal in fundraiser for Boys and Girls Club, then unveil ‘hybrid’ bike at Dane County Fair
For her third ‘Dane in a Day’ event, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk this Saturday will be all about bicycles and the recreational, service and economic benefits the self-propelled vehicles offer all ages.
Falk will start July 21 on her bicycle as a member of the Brat Fest – The Team at the Bike For Boys and Girls Club, the annual fundraiser event sponsored by Trek. Falk will be joined by her 11-year-old nephew and hundreds of other two-wheeled enthusiasts when the riders take off from Edgewood High School on Monroe Street in Madison at 10:30 a.m.
“One of the best ways to enjoy the wonderful outdoors of Dane County is on a bicycle. Biking is fun by yourself, or with your friends and family. And, it’s terrific exercise,” Falk said. “Part of our ride will be on the Capital City Trail -- one of our most popular trails. But Dane County is known for our fabulous biking opportunities.”
In April, the county produced an easy-to-use map showing county, state and federal recreational facilities. The new map can be found online at http://www.countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks/brochure.asp or call the Parks office for distribution locations, 608-246-3896.
“Another useful benefit of biking is to help others,” Falk said. “And that’s why I joined the ride to help the Boys and Girls Club. I get to be outside and also help a great organization.”
After the fundraiser ride, Falk will head to the Dane County Fairgrounds to help a
local engineer unveil his invention, the hybrid bike, at Hybridfest 2007 at 2 p.m. The event is taking place at the annual Dane County Fair.
Falk will join Jeff Radtke, a University of Wisconsin-Madison-trained engineer, and others to discuss his device that changes a bicycle into a moped with a simple installation.
“This is a hybrid bike – a highly efficient and environmentally sound way to travel,” Falk said of the Neodymics BMU creation. “This is small business at its best.”
Saturday’s events mark the third in Falk’s Dane in a Day outreach series, dedicated to highlighting the county’s recreational opportunities for all to enjoy for little or no cost.
