Dane County Adults Recognized For Academic Achievements

More than 40 Dane County adults who received their General Education Development (GED) diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), or who achieved significant grade level increases are being honored today (Friday, July 9), at 11 a.m. at a special graduation and recognition ceremony at the Dane County Job Center, Aberg Avenue, where they received instruction in the Adult Basic Education lab. “These men and women are the picture of perseverance and dedication, juggling work, children, and other demands to complete the work to meet their educational goals,” said Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. “Being a high school graduate and improving one’s education is key to retaining employment, advancing in a career and raising their family income. These individuals have taken huge steps through their hard work.” The individuals being recognized were enrolled during the past two years in the Adult Basic Education program as part of their participation in the W-2 program administered by the Dane County Department of Human Services. Educators employed by SHEA Services under a contract with Dane County provide Adult Basic Education instruction. The graduates of this program have overcome many challenges including homelessness, family troubles, frequent moves and instabilities that make studying for and passing the High School Equivalency Diploma or increasing grade level competencies a major accomplishment. Over the past several years, many of the graduates have gone on to further their education with a number of them enrolling at MATC. The services are offered at the Dane County Job Center on Aberg Avenue in Madison. ###
