Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today announced grant awards to three organizations for projects that help promote awareness, conservation and preservation of Dane County’s natural resources. “These groups are saving prairies, teaching kids about the environment, and helping neighbors have healthy lawns without chemicals,” said Falk. “Sometimes a small grant can make a difference.” The Dane County Environmental Council, a five-member council appointed by Falk and approved by the County Board, selected the following grants: · $400 to the Girl Scouts of Black Hawk Council, Inc., to develop a new interpretive trail at the Scouts’ Camp Brandenburg in Middleton. · $350 to the Prairie Enthusiasts, an organization committed to the protection and management of native prairie and savanna, for equipment to help prepare ground for planting prairie around remaining remnant prairies; and · $250 to the Greater Madison Healthy Lawn Team, Inc., to purchase ergonomic weeding tools that this group intends to lend out to 20 Madison and surrounding area neighborhoods to assist people in implementing non-chemical weed control practices. The Council’s mission is to assist public and private groups in recognizing and protecting natural areas in Dane County and to assume an educational role in the awareness, conservation and protection of the environment a1nd natural resources. This annual small grant program is one of the activities that the Council sponsors as part of fulfilling its mission.
