A Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured when two men attempted to flee from a traffic stop on Highway 14 in the town of Black Earth.

At 2:50 pm, the deputy stopped a white Buick sedan believed to be involved in a fraud investigation. While he was trying to make contact with the two men in the Buick, they drove away, hitting the deputy with the car. The suspects turned into the parking lot of Wisconsin Heights High School, where another deputy was able to pin the vehicle with his squad. The two male suspects then ran from the vehicle in different directions.

Law enforcement from throughout the county responded to the scene and quickly established a large perimeter. In addition to a ground search, resources used included several drone teams and K9’s. Citizens calling with tips and information were also very helpful. The first suspect was located at 3:44 pm, hiding in a silo. The second suspect was located with the use of the drones in a nearby marsh about 15 minutes later. Both men were taken into custody peacefully.

The injured deputy was transported by EMS to a local hospital. His injuries are not considered life threatening. He is a 6-year veteran of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

During the search, Wisconsin Heights High School was put on lockdown for the safety of the students and staff. As soon as both suspects were in custody, everyone was released.

“This call highlights the danger our deputies and fellow officers face on a daily basis and we pray for their safety every day. I’m immensely proud of the response by our deputies and the many first responders who showed up and brought this situation to a quick and peaceful resolution,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett.

The WI State Patrol will be the lead investigative agency for this incident, and any future requests for information should be directed to their office by calling 608-846-8500.
